Inkjet or laser jet

Been shopping about for a decent printer, and the main choices for the home or small office are laserjet it inkjet.

The first step is understanding the differences between the two very different systems.

Inkjet uses ink cartridges and jets the ink onto the paper. Laserjet uses tonner and works by lasering the toner onto the paper. In terms of speed laserjet can print a lot quicker, but inkjet printers are generaly a lot easier to maintain and manage.

One driving factor may be cost, again this can be a difficult area to work out if you look at if from a cost of ownership point if view. You may purchase a dirt cheap inkjet printer, but find it costs a fortune to replace the ink cartridges.

If you are a low volume user then inkjet may be the way to go. For higher volume users LaserJet may be a wiser move.

Before you buy a printer estimate how much you will use it. Use this figure to work out roughly how long you expect your cartridges to last and price replacements. You can then work out your cost of ownership.

For me it will be used fairly regularly, text only so LaserJet is the way to go.
