Web development past and present

In the past being a webmaster was all about knowing enough about everything to get by. Now the term webmaster is probably a very loosly used term to refer to the lead developer of a team.

Today the industry has so many advanced sub sections that it would be almost impossible to effectivly know and use them all.

Within a corporate environment you will have the lead developer, designers, coders, programers and graphics gurus. For a one person opperation this poses problems. What should you know, how should you learn and how should you apply it?

As a web developer a firm grasp of html and css is a must. The ability to edit and manipulate images is also very important. I also belive at least some knowledge of a server side scripting language such as php will be very beneficial.

The industry does change very rapidly, and it is important to evolve with it. Never try and over stretch, do what you can, but do it well.

Mack.
